Stroke is still one of the most important causes of disability and death in Greece. At our center, we provide specialized primary prevention services for the occurrence of cardiovascular complications through the assessment and modification of risk factors, as well as secondary prevention with the aim of reducing the risk of reoccurrence of a stroke. The primary prevention strategies we follow are aimed at modifying lifestyle and diet, addressing risk factors such as arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and lipid disorders as well as starting appropriate antithrombotic treatment, where this is indicated, accordingly. Regarding secondary prevention, in liaison with health professionals of other specialties, we create specialized therapeutic protocols concerning pharmacological or other interventions according to international guidelines (e.g treatment of symptomatic carotid artery stenosis in selected patients, closure of patent foramen ovale after cryptogenic stroke, treatment of insulin resistance, etc.).
Our team can also contribute substantially to the thorough investigation of a stroke after the acute phase, especially in people without known risk factors, to the monitoring of the course of recovery as well as the therapeutic response. Our approach to this category of patients is multidisciplinary and personalized, with the aim of providing the best possible support, care and responsible information to patients and their relatives.
